Drawing of All Hallows

A sepia drawing dated 1912 by Nina Rice, daughter-in-law of Horsington rector, Reverend Richard H. Rice, hangs in All Saints Church. It is well known locally and is a copy of an older illustration dated [1786?] which depicts All Hallows Church (demolished in 1860), the precursor of the current church. Few people know who the original artist was or that it has a connection to Joseph Banks. Jean Howard, writing for the Society for Lincolnshire History and Archaeology website, attributes it to a watercolourist and topographical draughtsman called Nattes. In 1789 Joseph Banks commissioned John Claude Nattes (c.1765-1839?) to record the buildings of Lincolnshire and this is believed to be one of more than 700 drawings and watercolours, made between 1789 and 1797, which are now preserved in Lincolnshire County Archives. Nattes produced some of the earliest examples of watercolour painting in Britain. This information will be checked as soon as the archive becomes available. ​
